Black Union Soldiers and the United States Colored Troops (USCT)

Killed at Resaca includes a Black Union soldier portrayed by George E. Edwards. The character appears throughout the film as part of the Union military world created for the screen.

In the film, the Black Union soldier guards headquarters, salutes officers, marches with Union soldiers, participates in the camp and hardtack sequence, joins a flag-of-truce detail, and helps recover and carry Lieutenant Brayle’s body. He also assists General Hazen with his uniform. These scenes place a Black Union soldier visibly inside the film’s military story rather than treating Black military service as a separate historical footnote.

“No single actor could represent the experiences, sacrifices, courage, and complexity of nearly 180,000 Black Union soldiers.”— George E. Edwards, who portrays the Black Union soldier

The film uses this one character as an entry point into the much larger history of Black Union military service. The character does not purport to represent every Black soldier or every USCT experience.
